Summary - King George V Biodiversity Management Plan

Biodiversity, a contraction of the phrase "biological diversity", the variety of life on Earth at all its levels, from genes to ecosystems, and the ecological and evolutionary processes that sustain it.

CONSERVATION IN YOUR COMMUNITY

• WHAT IS THE PLAN ALL ABOUT?
The Biodiversity Management plan sets out to clearly define a sustainable holistic management plan for the King George V playing field at Bucks Green to; conserve, manage, protect and improve the wildlife habitat, improve public access and amenities, provide an educational programme to meet required curriculum needs, provision of organised public activities to compliment the plan and to provide a valuable resource all the people of Rudgwick can enjoy and be proud of.

• SO WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY?

There are many definitions of Biodiversity but one of the simplest is that it is refers to the variety and variability among living organisms and the ecological complexes in which they occur (US Congress Office of Technology Assessment 1987).

• HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME?

Biodiversity is critical to our continued existence on the planet but at the same time seriously under threat from human activities. The World Conservation Union's Red List has indicated that 1 bird species in 8, 13% of the world's flowering plants and a quarter of all mammals are under threat of extinction. Maintaining biodiversity should be everyone's concern.

• WHO'S INVOLVED?

The Rudgwick Preservation Society in conjunction with Rudgwick Parish Council, West Sussex Countryside Rangers, Forestry Commission, Environment Agency, Southern Water, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Horsham District Council, Waverley Rangers and many others.

• WHEN WILL IT START?

It already has, preliminary work started in January of 2006.

• HOW IS IT FUNDED?

The aim of the plan is to leverage funding from targeted national, district and local organisation levels, for both initial capital costs and year on year running costs. This will be complimented by various seasonal fund raising events.

• HOW CAN I HELP?

We currently urgently need volunteers to help in a wide range of organised activities throughout the park ranging from tree planting, to litter picking. Please complete a volunteer form with your contact details and mail / pass back to Eric Slade or Trevor Nash and we will contact you to advise you of the first organised activity. No time to spare, not to worry, we would love you to take part in one of our open activities, or just enjoy your park knowing it is being looked after for you and future generations.
